A page titled "How I Experience Online Communities Today". Subtitle: "An interactive page about modern online communities and what makes them utterly frustrating to me." Content: The internet has changed a lot since the time I started using it 20 years ago. The first online community I joined was focused on the RollerCoaster Tycoon series, featuring a website with an upload system to share your creations, and a forum as a gathering place where you could talk about the games, get help for game-related issues, organize contests and more. In addition to that, people would often use instant messengers to stay in contact with some members. It was the typical anatomy of online communities at the time, and it worked nicely for me. Today, the landscape is very different and I’m left with a growing feeling of frustration. Frustration because forums have been replaced in favor of Discord servers, a platform which can’t possibly fulfill the same role since it’s the exact opposite of asynchronous communication. Frustration because I just can’t handle real-time platforms well, even more so since I got a job. Frustration because the kind of interaction I like has been eradicated and now it’s mostly surface-level text bites and memes. But rather than writing about it in more detail, I’m just going to show you first-hand how I experience online communities today.
