Microblogging? Oh boy. I don’t even know where to begin. The list of problems I see with this type of platform is huge, and a lot of them can be traced back to the absolutely horrendous core design ( volpeon.ink/notebook/modern-social-media/ ) of microblogging which basically YOLOs everything into a global context with no regard for how socializing works in real life. It contradicts our intuition of context so badly that it feels like our posts “escape containment” all the time, leading to annoying responses because of a mismatch of standards, of rules, of what’s considered acceptable behavior and what isn’t. And at the same time, it’s almost impossible to reliably avoid posts you want to avoid because it’s just a huge firehose and possibilities to filter it are a joke. They call it a “global town square”, but a town square would never result in that clusterfuck of problems because in the physical world we have the means to organize ourselves that Twitter et al simply handwave away. The traditional microblogging paradigm is shit.
