@Johann150 I was just doing that and it may be due to the additional "charset=utf-8". I see nothing else that could cause it

OH! I got it. The debug log says
Skipping profile field link verification of https://volpeon.ink/ for user 9x1pkmiu4v33a1zr: precondition failed

The condition to get this output is
				if (
					res is not
					{
						IsSuccessStatusCode: true,
						Content.Headers: { ContentType.MediaType: "text/html", ContentLength: <= 1_000_000 }
					}
				)

My server respond with a content type of
text/html; charset=utf-8. I don't know if C# handles this case or not, but this is the only problem I can see here.

@Johann150 The code should handle it AFAICT: iceshrimp.dev/iceshrimp/Iceshrimp.NET/src/commit/ed1623b572a17acbeac96092aa45af578a1ab50b/Iceshrimp.Backend/Core/Services/UserService.cs#L1180

I just don't get why my website won't verify on Iceshrimp.NET even with the latest patch to work with <link> as well. It makes the request and my server doesn't block it, and the links are correctly defined, so what the fuck????

@stefan

It's doing a good job interfacing with the fediverse even though most of the content isn't suitable for forums.
You can see it in the world view:
bb.wyvern.rip/world
That's also why I'm not really using it and sticking with Iceshrimp.NET. It just works better for these posts.

What I'm missing are real threads where people are taking their time to discuss a topic over weeks or months or even years. That's extremely hard to establish in a place where microblogging without character limits (mostly) is more common.

But I'm sure I haven't tested all the possibilities yet, and big changes don't happen overnight. There's no harm in leaving my instance running and exploring the state of things every once in a while.

@Neotheta

I guess our experiences are completely different. I took a break from a lot of communities starting in 2019 to cope with stress. I left one forum which was very active, and returned one year ago only to find that most people are gone and activity low. It's still far from dead, but to me the contrast is staggering.
Another forum closed completely and now simply links to a Discord server.
I can't help but be cynical with this turn of events.

I'm not sure if you're implying that I want to be where everyone is, so just to clarify: I saw a lot of people join fedi, only to move on to Twitter or Bluesky because that's "where everyone is". That's what I wanted to express there, this sentiment.
And as much as I hate it, I can see why people think this way. Modern platforms are stressful and require so much mental capacity that the best way to deal with them is sticking with platforms where most people you're interested in are. It just sucks that this usually leads to them moving away from the places I hang around, rather than the reverse. And that's why I was trying to follow them for a while.
In don't want to be where everyone is, but I want to be where my friends went (which will automatically be where everyone is).

@PartlyTermite RSS feeds basically allow you to "follow" a website and you will see all new posts in your RSS reader of choice (the "timeline").
I attached what mine look like with the "YouTube" category open. As you can see, the concept works nicely for a lot of types of content. And I don't even need a YouTube account.
drgn_uwu
Usually, new items will be marked as unread, which will be marked as read once you open them. This and categories makes it easy to keep track of a lot of sources without missing anything.
And that's really it. Here's a website explaining the concept in
way more detail: wpmayor.com/beginners-guide-simple-syndication-rss/
