Light themes have the problem that you can't have strong colors and strong contrast. You can see it nicely in the OKLCH color picker: oklch.com
The "lightness" section shows that as it gets darker, you can't reach the same strength as with lighter colors, but lighter colors means worse contrast.
Colored backgrounds would bring light themes closer to dark themes in terms of distinctness of tokens.
